About Scratch-Off Technology

HP Easy Release scratch-off ink creates interactive lottery-style cards and concealed data elements. Unlike traditional scratch-off cards that use metallic foil with limited design options, our digital solution allows for vibrant, full-color designs in both the hidden and visible areas of your piece.

Where traditional methods lock you into fixed metallic foil and rectangular scratch areas, HP EZ Release technology gives you complete creative freedom: full-color scratch surfaces, any shape or pattern, and variable data personalization with no additional setup cost.

Simpler than it looks: Although scratch-off uses multiple spot colors (EZ Release, KNoise, KLayer, HP White 1), the setup is straightforward—all overprinted layers are the exact same size and shape. Simply duplicate your scratch area shape and assign different spot colors to each copy.

Step 1 of 10
Layer Structure

Understand the Layer Structure

Scratch-off uses a two-pass workflow. Stage 1 (hidden content) prints first, then protective varnish is applied offline, followed by Stage 2 (scratch-off layers).

💡

All overprint layers (EZ Release, KNoise, KLayer, HP White 1) share the exact same size and shape.

EZ Release Spot Color

Create EZ Release Spot Color

Open Window > Swatches and create a new spot color named EZ Release. This is the release layer that enables scratching.

⚠️

Critical: EZ Release must have 50% opacity set in the Transparency panel (not the swatch value).

KNoise Spot Color

Create KNoise Spot Color (Optional)

Create a spot color named KNoise for the security grain pattern. This layer prevents hidden content from being visible when held up to light.

💡

KNoise is optional but recommended. Use Effect > Texture > Grain for the noise pattern.

KLayer Spot Color

Create KLayer Spot Color (Optional)

Create a spot color named KLayer (or Spot Black) for the 100% black opaque blocker. This provides additional light-blocking security.

💡

KLayer is optional but recommended. Combined with KNoise, it fully obscures hidden content.

HP White 1 Spot Color

Create HP White 1 Spot Color

Create a spot color named HP White 1. This provides the opaque foundation for the cover CMYK artwork.

💡

White ink ensures the cover artwork is vibrant and not affected by underlying layers.

Apply Spot Colors

Apply Spot Colors to Scratch Area

Duplicate your scratch area shape for each layer. Apply the corresponding spot color to each copy: EZ Release, KNoise, KLayer, and HP White 1—all stacked in the same position.

⚠️

Key concept: All four shapes are identical—same size, same position, different spot colors.

Enable Overprint

Enable Overprint Fill on ALL Layers

Select all scratch-off layer objects and open Window > Attributes. Check Overprint Fill for each layer: EZ Release, KNoise, KLayer, and HP White 1.

⚠️

Critical: ALL specialty layers must have Overprint Fill enabled. Without it, layers will knock each other out.

Verify Swatches

Verify All Swatches

Check the Swatches panel to confirm all spot colors are present: EZ Release, KNoise, KLayer, and HP White 1. Each should show the spot color indicator (white triangle).

💡

Use View > Overprint Preview to see how layers will interact when printed.

Export Overprint File

Export File 1: Overprint (Stage 2)

Hide the hidden content layer. Export PDF containing only the scratch-off layers: EZ Release, KNoise, KLayer, HP White 1, and Cover CMYK.

⚠️

Two separate files required: This file prints SECOND (after varnish is applied to hidden content).

Export Underprint File

Export File 2: Underprint (Stage 1)

Hide all scratch-off layers. Export PDF containing only the hidden content (CMYK or K). This file prints FIRST, then receives protective varnish before Stage 2.

💡

Include registration marks in both files for alignment during the two-pass workflow.
